How are you staying healthy this fall? Since running outdoors is about the only form of exercise that appeals to me, I’ve started the Couch-2-5K running program this month and am looking forward to pounding the pavement with Sweet T this fall. I’ve successfully completed the program twice before, (including while I was pregnant!) but every summer the heat here in the South forces me to quit. There’s nothing like 75 degrees and 80% humidity at 5:00 in the morning to dampen your spirits when it comes to running! Thanks to my jogging stroller and a running track only a half mile away, I’ll be enjoying the cooler weather and staying healthy in the process. Yay for fall!

    with it being apple season in NY state, there’s no shortage of fruit in our house, and since we love apples, we grab apples as snacks on the run!

  25. Ugh, I always end up eating too much when the weather cools off, starting with Halloween candy. But, I try to make up for it with lots of slow-cooked stews and soups with healthy ingredients like lentils and squash. They are super-easy to freeze, very comforting when it’s freezing here in NYC and my 16-month-old son even liked the sausage and white bean w/broccoli rabe that I made from a Rachael Ray recipe recently! I guess that’s not a total surprise as he loves the Sprout minestrone with beans and greens, but still — always good to have a toddler who will eat his veggies!

  52. Walk when you can. Dress in layers so you can quickly adjust your wardrobe to the changing temps. Wash your hands often. Take it easy on the coffee and hot drinks..they’re wonderful for a quick warm-me-up but don’t over-indulge just because of the cooler weather.

  127. We are taking advantage of the cooler weather by going for evening walks/bike rides as a family. Also taking advantage of harvest time by visiting our local farmers market for fresh fall veggies. To keep fall cold germs away, I encourage my boys to wash their hands as soon as they get home from school and again before they eat. Also keeping hand sanitizer handy.

  340. In fall and winter, because it’s not hot I often forget to drink water, leaving me dehydrated. I’ve learned I drink more water if I keep sparkling mineral water in the frig, and often drink it with a squeeze of fresh orange or lemon for the vitamin C.

  344. I am avoiding Cokes/soft drinks this fall and winter. I already get enough “sweets” through goodies during the holidays! I also try to make a point to walk at least 20 minutes a day, whether it’s on my lunch break or with our dog in our neighborhood.

  360. I avoid most junkfood, except ice cream. Wake up and do yoga every morning (basic yoga – pranayama) . Keep myself hydrated throughout the day, and try to encourage family to do the same. :)

  364. Keep the kids active to boost our immune system at the same time, and fill them with different fruits, complex carbohydrates and veggies. Everyone in the family takes garlic to help prevent sinus, and running noses. We even keep our dog healthy by giving him a waterless shampoo bath that has tea tree oil to keep him from scratching.

  629. My husband and I both work full time, but we help and encourage one another to get up an extra 30 minutes early so we can get in a little exercise in before the hectic day begins. My son plays soccer and basketball, so that keeps him active and my daughter is crawling so she STAYS active!! I try to find quick, healthy meals to prepare instead of eating out – that’s a big “health” saver, but sometimes difficult to overcome!! Thanks so much for the chance to win!! :)

    We play outside as much as possible, just bundle up :) and when it’s just too cold or yucky outside, we have dance parties where we turn on fun music and act like goobers dancing around everywhere ;)

  693. Well the cold months set in and we’re all indoors a lot more, so I think the best thing to do is make sure you don’t have excess junk food in the pantry. It’s also important to not lose focus by letting laziness set in.. The cold makes a great excuse not to go and workout, but all that does is cheat oneself. In my mind it’s the tougher months to stay in check because of the holidays and weather, so my best tip is relax but don’t let it a small stumble snowball! (Christian N. Cnfc800@gmail.com)

    We are going to be eating more soups loaded with vegtables. Also when the weather is too cool for the walking track, we are going to use the Wii games more and probably pop in a kids exercise dvd.

  759. We’re staying healthy by walking every day in the evenings. Now when it’s getting colder, we’re planning to go to our park district and walk the indoor track. We’ll be much more likely to keep it up if we can walk where it’s warm :)

  794. We try to eat well and get exercise every day, no matter what the season.

  795. My best tip for staying healthy is to not give in to temptation of getting takeout for dinner more often. I find myself tempted a lot more by takeout this time of year because by the time I get off of work it is already starting to get dark and it makes it feel much later than it really is, so it feels like I don’t have time to cook dinner.
