Disposable-diapering mamas don’t go anywhere! While Bummas is now a household name for us cloth diapering addicts, the wipes actually got their start among disposable users. I had no idea! Here’s the scoop.

The creation of Bummas came about when we had our first baby boy. When your first arrives, you are given all kinds of advice:“Use the wet commercial wipes, don’t use the wet commercial wipes, use gauze; use whatever is handy to block the pee; use another diaper to block the pee; don’t use that, use this; use powder to dry them off, don’t use powder-it contains talc and studies have linked talc to cancer.” The one thing that was never mentioned was how to dry our little guy’s “stuff” off after the clean up. Our baby’s bum was just way too wet to put a diaper back on–and blowing down there until you’re blue in the face just wasn’t working. Thus Bummas were born. A soft absorbent, luxurious baby cloth to soak up all the wetness.Grab a Bumma cloth wipe before opening the diaper. Sneak “attacks” are frequent and will happen the second you open the diaper! Place the Bumma over the privates while tending to the other parts. One Bumma will soak up an entire pee. Clean up baby with a regular wipe or wet a Bumma and clean up sensitive skin. Use another Bumma to thoroughly dry baby off. Re-diaper. If the cover Bumma gets soaked rinse it off and throw it in the wash. The payoff- a dry bum, no diaper rash, and no surprise squirts. Save money on diapers, and save by not having to buy powder, and ointment.

While I’m a die-hard cloth diaperer I don’t generally go around proselytizing for the cause. If disposables work for you, then have at it, but wipes are a different matter. I’ve mentioned to several people that if I were forced to give up cloth diapering that I could do it, but I absolutely could not give up cloth wipes. Why? Besides all the unnatural junk in disposable wipes, the rash they cause on Sweet T’s sensitive skin, the price, and the smell that I hate, they just don’t work as well as cloth. Sweet T was in disposables for the first 4 weeks of her life and I never felt like her bottom was clean. The wipes seemed to leave a residue and sticky feel to her skin that I certainly don’t miss. Thankfully, there are alternative options like Bummas out there for those of us not satisfied with the performance of disposable diaper wipes.

As a cloth diapering mom to a little girl, here’s some things I love about Bummas

1. Size – the 5×7 size makes the Bummas perfect for rolling up and taking on-the-go

2. Texture – Let’s talk #2 here since you’re obviously no stranger to it if you are reading this. Sometimes a little homemade flannel wipe like I normally use just isn’t enough for one of Sweet T’s poos. Particularly if the poo was done quietly and flew under mommy’s radar and had time to dry up a little. While both sides of a Bummas are incredibly soft, one side is a little “scrubbier” than the other.

“Scrubby” side

Smoother sideThis works beautifully for the aforementioned poo. If you wet your wipes like I do. Use the scrubby side for deep cleaning (grab a second one if you need to) then use the smoother side to kind of buff and make sure you got every little bit of it off. I guess diaper changes around here have become a science as well as an art! ;)

3. Durability – Bummas is so confident in the durability of their wipes that each set is warrantied for one year!

4. Fun colors – Ok, so it doesn’t have anything to do with performance, but considering you are going to spend loads of time at the changing table until potty training, why not mix it up a little? Bummas come in five different varieties: The Tropical Ones, The Wild Ones, The Boy Ones, The Girl Ones, and The Natural Ones
